From another Newspaper:

I hope my translator app has worked properly:

Their last name is Abeln, Gerdes or Janszen, they live in Loruper Straße and their older citizens speak Low German. So it could be an ordinary place in Hümmling. But the speech is from Cincinnati in the US, as the crow flies about 6800 kilometers from here. Numerous German immigrants from this region have found a new home in the city in the state of Ohio and have been living there for several generations.

Kinship relationships are still maintained. And so two years ago the American Dave Abeln visited the home of his ancestors, Lorup. And more by chance, he struck at a shooting night of the shooting club Gehlenberg to say "Moin". This encounter was the origin of a tour that will probably always keep a Gehlenberger tour group in the best memories
Dave Abeln not only officially joined the rifle club on that said evening, he also invited to the rifle festival in Cincinnati. What was initially benevolently acknowledged by a handful of gunmen rather out of the beer mood, developed into a self-perpetuating one. True to the motto: "If so, because." Within a very short time there were about 50 registrations.

After two years of tour planning it was finally time for this October. 47 Gehlenberger made their way to the USA. First stop: Fort Wright, a district of Cincinnati. "There we were well received. The hospitality was overwhelming, "says Rolf Behnen, chairman of the shooting club Gehlenberg, who had helped organize the 14-day trip. "We were welcomed as friends," adds Norbert Schade, who was also part of the organization team.
In keeping with the arrival, an Oktoberfest was held on site. There, the guests from northern Germany were received, among others, by Mayor David Hatter. Previously, the Gehlenberger marched ahead with the club flag on the grounds. The hosts handed over a specially made table pennants, medals and certificates as well as an invitation to a return visit.

The first days spent the tour group in Cincinnati, visited, among other things, a ballpark, a brewery and a cathedral. "Dave Abeln and his friends took great care of us", Behnen is enthusiastic about the hosts.
After the successful start, the bus continued via Columbus and Cleveland to the world famous Niagara Falls. From the Canadian side, the Gehlenberger approached the waterfall on a boat. "This force of nature is very impressive," says Schade. There were even more thrills then a few kilometers downstream. There they crossed the Niagara River in more than 40 meters with a gondola.

After a stopover in the wine-growing region Ithaca, the Gehlenberger approached the world metropolis New York. Late in the evening they reached their destination. Since their hotel was right in the center, the journey to the domicile through the streets of Manhattan was worth the trip. "That's really a different world," Behnen reports. The city is in constant motion. In the following days the rifle group had visited everything what one had to see as a tourist. "Especially impressive was the visit to Ground Zero," says Behnen. It was hard to imagine that once there had stood the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. The memorial commemorating the 9/11 attacks was "a moving place," Schade said.
About Philadelphia and Baltimore, the trip led to their final point: Washington. Here, in contrast to New York, it would be much quieter and more contemplative. The historic capital with the White House and the Capitol they really liked.

On the last evening, the Gehlenberger let their impressions in a cozy round review again. One of the memories was that part of the group was stuck in a small elevator for an infinite amount of time. Or that a Gehlenberger in New York probably saved the life of a strange woman through her swift action. This had suddenly collapsed in the hotel corridor and was ventilated until the emergency services arrived.
Then in the evening another surprise guest came around the corner. Dave Abeln insisted on saying goodbye to the guests from Germany. For this he covered around 800 kilometers. "Dave made sure we had a great trip. You can not thank him enough for that, "says Rolf Behnen. The club chairman is also pleased that all participants had always participated so well and formed a great community.

Norbert Schade draws a close, but probably a very fitting conclusion of the trip: "There was little sleep, but we have experienced a tremendous amount.

A report from the German newspaper
Gehlenberg. Two rides had already been organized by Rolf Behnen, the 1st chairman of the Gehlenberger Schützenverein, and board member Norbert Schade. One was still standing. And that should, thetwodecided in 2016, go to the US. The idea came from Dave Abeln from Fort Wright in Kentucky. He has family ties to Gehlenberg, was first there in 2005, and in 2016 invited a few board membersoftheshooting club to his hometown. Like a snowball, more and more participants remember, Behnen remembers. In the end, 48 members embarked on the journey, first to Fort Wright and then overNiagaraFallsto New York. In Fort Wright, Washington and Gehlenberger experienced American hospitality first hand. Many of the inhabitants there have ancestors from Lorup.
tells Rainer Schröder, who formed the organization team of the journey with Behnen, Schade, Hans Wilke and Werner Böckmann. "We were not received as tourists, but as friends." And also as relatives, because during the visit, other common ancestors were discovered by hosts and visitors One of the highlights of the stay in Fort Wright was the participation in the Oktoberfest of the local St. Agnes-Kirchen parish., At the festival we marched in with our flag, the police blocked the street for us, the mayor read out a proclamation and handed us a certificate, "enthuses Behnen. Of course, we invited the Americans to Gehlenberg, but what we experienced at Fort Wright will not be topped. It was also impressive on the rest of the tour. By boat directly to Niagara Falls.
That was pretty adventurous, "says Behnen, recalling visiting the world-famous waterfall, which included a gondola ride across the Niagara River, but the most exciting was New York, Norbert points out."Ground Zero, for example, that was a goosebump moment." The memorial for the victims of the September 11 attacks was, adds Schröder, a very impressive place with a very special atmosphere. "
In general, New York is very special, very loud and hectic, very different from the much quieter Washington, after 2000 kilometers on the bus and about 25,000 steps per day the final destination of the trip. This is where Dave Abeln came in last Evening as a surprise guest to the group to say goodbye. "It was an intention of our journey to establish new relationships," says Behnen. We have gained a lot of impressions and, above all, made new friends. "
